UPDATE: OAK ISLAND
GOLD CACHE
REGARDING THE EAST GRANBY TREASURE
The article GOLD CACHE is wrong. FLOYD: "I hope
you print my story, because many of your readers made comments
and are wasting their time and money looking for it."
Here we go again. I am 64 years old and have lived
in Connecticut for most of my life. I became a coin collector
in 1964. After seeing many ads for metal detectors in COIN
WORLD, I bought a Whites detector and that got it all started.
Since that time, including the latest LOST TREASURE magazine, I
had read the story of 13 wagon loads of gold coin loaned from
France that got robbed at Bates Tavern. Unlike many authors, I
did a lot of research, including interviewing William Bates, who
was an old man. He, like many people, is a story teller. He
told me the story was true and that the boxes were buried near a
stream, because the digging was easy.
Years later I spoke to his son-in-law who lives in
the tavern, with his wife. He had to be in his sixties. I
asked him if William really believed the story. He told me that
the Bates had never heard of the story until they read the
letters from a woman to the Hartford Cournat newspaper in 1951.
Remember: Captain Lemuel Bates died at 91 years of
age. I hope to live that long. He lived in the tavern until he
died. That means he would tell his children, who would tell
their children the story. Most people believe that stories in
treasure magazines are false. The coins were never found, and
never will be, because the story is false. The treasure story
writer for LOST TREASURE magazine states that Richard H. Phelps
wrote a book claiming that Henry Wooster, a Tori, was involved
and wrote a letter to his mother stating that he had helped rob
the wagons with the coins. Wrong ! Phelps, who lived in East
Granby, never mentioned that story. He wrote that Henry had
robbed a house, with his friends, and went to England and came
back after the war. The article in the magazine also states "
in 1951 a Hartford woman wrote a series of articles about the
heist." If the story was true, then it would have been in the
local papers at the time. I also asked a woman who lived in
East Granby all of her life, why she didn't write about the
treasure in her East Granby history book. She said the story
was false. If you find the coins, just send me a picture.
Every time the story is printed, many new people show up at
Bates Tavern looking for the treasure. You would think that
someone would have found the coins since 1951---if the story was
true. I'd be grateful if anyone has any true stories of
treasure in Connecticut. Best of luck to you all.
ROMANIAN METAL DETECTING TRIP IS PLANNED !!
Hello !
A few months ago we were "trying" to get a trip to
Hungary planned, but their country starting having problems with
"civil unrest". riots, danger, etc, etc. It just would not be
smart to go there at this time---maybe in the future ?
BUT: an even better opportunity presented itself !
We contacted the Romanian government offices and they forwarded
our request to their Tourism Board and they then had several
offices contact us. THEY want us in Romania and it is SAFE.
The history of Romania is fantastic and metal
detecting there is almost unknown ! We can't help but be
successful. The guides will be myself ( Floyd Mann ), Karl
Backus ( International Treasure Hunter ), and a "local"
Romanian. We are currently working on "contracts" with local
farmers to use their properties to hunt on. Other sites will
also be negotiated on in the next few months. The things we
will uncover will be astounding !
Our first scheduled trip is mid-May ( with OTHER
trips to OTHER countries, in later months ). The 7-day trip is
limited to ten TEAM members. We have FOUR spots remaining !
Your finds there will be yours---after their archaeologists
fully record and photograph everything. The finds will have to
be mailed to you back at your home. We will metal detect 9 AM
to 5 PM daily, for 5 days, for Maximum recoveries ! Two days
will be planned for additional " sight-seeing".
All housing, meals, ground transportation and guide
service, while in Romania, is included in your fee of
$2,900.00. A video "souvenir" of your once-in-a-lifetime"
experience will be mailed to you after your return home.
Your airfare to Romania and back, from your home,
will be at your expense. A Passport is required. Additional
expenses you might expect to incur while in Romania might be:
alcoholic beverages, tips, souvenirs, film, phone calls,
entrance fees to attractions, personal items, and other small
expenses. A check-list will be sent to all TEAM members of what
to pack, how to prepare your detector for check-in, brochures on
Romania, and lots of other info. Every two weeks you will get
an "UPDATE" memo from me, keeping you completely informed of
EVERYTHING you need to know. I will also answer all questions
you may have. I should also be able to assist you in making
your flight arrangements and possibly negotiate a discount for
you.
Future trips to other countries are also planned and
participants in this Romania trip will be the FIRST ones to be
notified and allowed to sign up. China, Israel, and Australia
are currently being investigated.
Karl and I will be sure that you have the time of
your life, so you will want to go with us on future trips and we
will definitely appreciate your positive feedback and referrals
after the trip.
Do a GOOGLE search for ROMANIA----to view some of
the rich history, culture, and attractions.
