THE MILLION DOLLAR
CANNONBALL
Written By GARY
ODELL
An artifact of
great rarity has been found at
Sackets Harbor, New York.
Determined to be the first
cannonball to strike American
soil, the British 24 pound ball
shows the scars of impact and
additional bounces. Sackets
Harbor is located on the
northeast shore of Lake Ontario
thirty miles east of Kingston,
Ontario, home port of the
Canadian fleet.
The opening
battle of the War of 1812 fell
on the 19th of July, 1812 when
the Canadian Provincial Navy
attacked the harbor. Led by the
Royal George of 24 guns and with
the Prince Regent 22, Earl of
Moria 20, Simco 12 and Seneca 4,
a two hour battle ensued.
The object of the
attack was the return of the
merchant ship Lord Nelson, taken
by the USS Oneida in violation
of the Embargo Act of 1807. The
Oneida, under the command of Lt.
Melancthon Woolsey, was equipped
with 16 short range carronades
and no match for the long guns
of the Canadians.
Wholly unprepared
for action, the American
defenses consisted of two
9-pounders without shot, three
6-pounders, a 32-pounder without
shot and Oneida's carronades.
The 32 had been recently mounted
on a bluff at the entrance of
the harbor and was unknown to
the fleet. When the action
started, the range of the 32
caused a conservative approach
to fleet maneuvers. Improvised
ammunition for the 32 was
undersized shot wrapped in
various materials. Lt. Woolsey
ordered the starboard guns of
the ship removed and placed on a
gravel ridge to the right of the
32, then anchored in echelon to
bring both broadsides to bear.
The prevailing
winds from the southwest made
the fleet do their gunnery runs
from the starboard sides, then
tack to come around for another
run. With most shots falling
short, a close-in run found the
range for a long 24-pounder and
the 32-pound carronades of the
Royal George. The 24's cleared
the bluff and the 32's were
striking the bluff.
Hough's "History
of Jefferson County", published
in 1854, states "all the enemies
balls but one or two, falling
against the rocks at the foot of
the bluff." He was obviously
quoting living participants of
this action. The 24's plowed
furrows on each bounce and were
easily followed. The ball that
was found was deeply embedded in
mud about 300 yards inland, the
second shot was found at the
same distance and was returned
to our 32 for refiring.
Considering the
direction of the attack and the
location of the ball embedded in
the mud, it is certain that this
ball is the First Ball to Strike
American Soil. In the
after-action report of August 3,
1812 Lt. Woolsey stated 'the 32
pound shot thrown by the Royal
George we have got'.
The ball is in
remarkably good condition after
190 years underground. The ball
weighs a little over 24 pounds
and is perfectly cylindrical.
It still has traces of gray and
black paint. The impact marks
and additional bounce marks are
easily seen. It is a National
Treasure.
It was found on
July 18, 2002 with a Whites
Coinmaster.
CREATING WEALTH
THROUGH ADVENTURE
I think everyone
KNOWS by now that I do not
publish "ADS" ( within the text
of my newsletters )---not for
FREE, nor for money. I'll give
a free promo for a "newbies" new
website, just because I like to
see initiative and I'll promote
any website that I think has
merit and won't hurt my
reputation.
I do have 3 or 4
"Favorites" that show up
consistently / frequently---just
because they are so good &
informative. ONE of my BEST
Favorites is Stan Grist's
website.
Stan recently
finished his CREATING WEALTH
THROUGH ADVENTURE with the Stan
Grist System 2006. I have had
this e-book for about 2 weeks
now and I'm only about half way
thru it !! It is HUGE ! More
than 1,900 pages contained in 15
pdf downloads, including 10
great bonuses !
Here is a brief
introduction to Stan's new
e-System...
Dear Fellow
Adventurer,
If you didn't have
to go to work every day and
could afford to travel anywhere
in the world to discover gold,
ancient treasure or a lost city,
where would you want to go and
what would you hunt for?
Stan Grist here,
writing to wish you and your
loved ones a Happy Holiday
Season ! I am also writing you
with a very exciting
announcement. As you already
know, I have been a full-time
explorer, prospector and
treasure hunter for many
decades.
Over these decades,
I have pioneered many different
ways to live a life of adventure
while earning an increasing
annual income. I have
discovered the very most
efficient ways to recover gold,
treasures of all sizes,
diamonds, gems, valuable fossils
and meteorites. I have also
figured out how to turn my
discoveries into fast cash as
well as long-term mining deals
that pay me ongoing monthly
royalties.
This last year I
decided to catalogue most of my
adventurous life experiences and
procedures into a "SYSTEM" that
anyone can use to duplicate my
success and lifestyle for
themselves. I ended up creating
a huge, brand new, .pdf,
e-package. This
e-package currently sells for
$29.95. The price will rise on
January 31, 2006 to $49.95.
Warm Regards, STAN
Please check out
Stan's website for MORE info on
this e-package and LOTS of other
exciting offers ! About the 4th
paragraph down, on the
website, you have a link to
click on that will give you the
FULL details on this great
offer. Just DO it---only $29.95
! CHEAP---considering ALL of
the info you will receive.
