SOME MISSOURI TALES
For more then 130 years the Steamboat Arabia, a 171 foot vessel with more then 200 tons of supplies and provisions destined for pioneering settlements along the Missouri River lay lost but not forgotten.
The Arabia sank in 1856 while ascending the Missouri River near present day Kansas City. After years of research in 1985, Greg Hawley & Co. went in search of the Arabia after determining a change in the rivers historic course from present day. Forty-five feet below a present day cornfield Hawley found the Arabia in 1985.
For more information contact: Greg Hawley: Co-Director, Arabia Steamboat Museum at 816.471.1856. The museum is located at: 400 Grand Blvd. Kansas City, Mo. 64106
and frequently escape pursuing French warships. These galleons often heavily laden with Peruvian gold could easily flee up the river where the deep-drought French ships could not go.
Hearing of Ozark gold the Spanish continued north-bound before proceeding on foot into the Ozark Mountains. They mined here until the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 before setting off for Spain, with their Peruvian and recently acquired Ozark gold.
They found their vessels destroyed by hostile Indians, forced to abandon the treasure it is said the Spanish placed it in an old mine, or cave whereupon the entrance was concealed and the Spaniards departed in the direction of the sea-coast.
Local legend claims the Spanish all died from disease or in battle, never having recovered their treasure. The old mine, or cave as it is sometimes called is believed to be located about 40 miles S.E. of Springfield and maybe flooded from nearby Beaver Creek.
